Choosing Wallpapers and Wallcoverings

Wallpaper and wallcoverings have their own niche in interior decorating and come with some advantages over paint. Wallpaper can act as a better insulator than paint in homes in colder climates and can also keep down noise. You can create a texture or design with wall coverings that is not possible with paint.

Some wallpaper ideas for your next decorating project:

• One-wall wonders. Wallpaper hung on one wall in a room can make a room look larger. It can become an accent to enhance the design of the room.
   
• The New Generation. Murals are becoming more popular for all applications. Everything from extreme sports to beach scenes, murals have become a popular, environmentally friendly alternative.
   
• Major proportions. With two-story family rooms and foyers and higher ceilings in new construction, some manufacturers are making traditional patterns, but in super sizes to give more dramatic effects.
   
• Living color. Newly popular combinations of colors such as brown with blue, pink with black and red with cream are making appearances on wall coverings.
   
• Easy-hang wallpapers. These new papers are designed to be "hassle-free." The papers, also known as "non-woven" papers, adhere well to walls, can be repositioned easily, do not expand or contract, and are more easily replaced than traditional wall coverings.
